Press Release
Celebrate the beginning of summer at Lexington's 30th annual Discovery Day, on Saturday May 23,
2009, from 10:00 a.m. till 3:00 p.m. Sponsored by the Lexington Retailers Association, this event is
designed for residents to "rediscover" their town, and nonresidents to "discover" the delights of
Lexington. Last year, over 20,000 people attended this giant outdoor festival. The rain date is May 30th.
Over 60 of Lexington’s businesses and civic organizations will be hosting this
family oriented, fun filled day. This springtime tradition combines a street
fair and sidewalk sale, and will again be held in the Muzzey Street/Waltham
Street Municipal parking lot behind Michelson’s Shoes.
Lexington retailers will be ready for the crowds with plenty of great merchandise and giveaways.
Local restaurants will be selling a variety of tasty food including Bollywood’s Tandoor barbeque,
Daikanyama’s Japanese cuisine, Khushboo’s Indian cuisine, Teppenyaki’s Asian cuisine,
Tutto Italiano’s fresh mozzarella and pasta dishes, Upper Crust’s gourmet pizza, Candy Castle’s
homemade ice cream and slush, and Domino’s pizza.
Between shopping and eating, take time to visit Lexington civic group’s booth and learn about what’s
happening in the community. The Lion’s Club “Eye Mobile” will be performing free, noninvasive
screening for hypertension, vision loss, eye disease, and hearing loss. Like all great street fairs there
will be clowns, face painting and games to keep the kids happy. Stop by and discuss your concerns
with State Representative Jay Kaufman, as he holds “Office Hours”.
In addition to great food, bargain merchandise, and displays of what Lexington has to offer, there will
be live entertainment throughout the day. It will begin with performances from the students of the
Dance Inn at the bandstand. At 10:45 music by Ben Rudnick and Friends’ get the crowds moving.
Topping the day off will be the talented Lexington High School Jazz Improvisational and Jazz Combo
Ensembles.
Drawings for prizes donated by local merchants will be continuous throughout
the day. Following Discovery Day, the winners of the merchant's prizes will be
notified through the mail of their prize and the location of the business where
they can pick up their prize. Coupons are available in the LRA advertisement in
this publication. To be eligible for the prize drawings, entrants must deposit
their coupon at the LRA booth located next to the bandstand. The winners of
the Discovery Day's free prizes will be announced from the bandstand.
Free rides will be provided by LEXPRESS, to help alleviate traffic around the
center and to give new riders a chance to try out the bus service. If you are
driving, there will be free parking at all Lexington Center parking meters
and in the Depot Lot. LEXPRESS will operate special Saturday hours
from the 10:00 a.m. routes through the 4:00 p.m. routes. The regular fare will
be charged for those going to and from Burlington.
The Lexington Recreation Department will be selling swim tags, tennis court,
and golf ID’s. The Lexington Department of Public Works Department will be
providing information on water conservation and water quality. Get the latest
safety tips from Lexington’s Police and Fire Departments.
Don’t forget to stop by the Lexington Historical Society’s Relinquished Treasures
Spring Sale & Auction at the Depot. The Treasures sale is from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.
followed by the Special Items Auction at 2 p.m. Proceeds will support the organization,
which has been instrumental in preserving the town's history for over 120 years.
